Outstanding piece! And I too wonder what good is "Fuck you money" if you just kiss Trumps ass. I'm on a fixed income and I'll die with a gun in my hand before I bend a knee to these pieces of shit. Glad I canceled WaPo after Baldy killed the Kamala endorsement.
Reed, this was a meaningful essay to me, as I cherish nothing more than the free press. The free press, at its best, protects us from ourselves, more than law enforcement, more than the blessed army (of which I was a member of both). And while bittersweet and ominous in the big picture, we knew it was already a dead-paper walking once Bezos bought it. And that hurts to my core, because so many good and smart and decent people work there. But I think we should embrace Bezos coming out of the closet and declaring his feelings, so we can truly move on. New media is abounding and realigning itself, and the smartest thing is to say goodbye to the paper and never look back, and hope all the good people there exit out of there and away from the tainted gray lady. Time of death has been called.
300,000 subscribers cancelled in the last few months and I’m sure the number will climb. But Bozos doesn’t need subscribers, he just wants to continue to control the narrative. What a stain upon journalism.
I read both "Personal History" (Katharine Graham, what a woman) and "A Good Life" (Ben Bradlee), fabulous books about that time period and The Post. Read everything about Watergate. I can't even use the old "spinning in their graves" comment re: what Katharine and Ben would think now. There are no words.
Thank you for this article today, Reed. Shameful. Disgusting. No more adjectives left.
.. along with countless others, who now endure endless pleas for other sites' subscriptions - - all superseding the fishwraps' price. I wonder how many there are... I just know I cannot afford them all on a Social Security check.
Bezos ordered Was Post editor to concentrate on personal freedom and free markets.
He’s been watching old Hollywood westerns where the parts about government participation are conveniently ignored

Personal freedom:
Legislators should eliminate all those pesky worker protections, unions, and social insurance eliminating social security, Medicare, Medicaid, osha safety standards and insurance, etc.
Amendment to the constitution:
The freedom to be maimed on the job, live life as a miserable serf, and suffer a horrible death shall not in any way be infringed by government action.
Free Markets:
Legislators should eliminate all efforts at curbing or countering monopoly control and manipulation of markets and regulate safety of goods and services.
Amendment to the Constitution:
The freedom to completely monopolize any market, shut down competition, and defraud at will shall not be infringed!
This freedom shall not in any way limit government powers of corporate bailouts.
Reed: Back in the 1980’s, My family and I got to know Haynes Johnson. He visited us a number of times when National issues occurred and prior to to any National Election, Haynes would travel around the US and talk with people (families) about their views on the Country and the upcoming election. He also took my teenage daughter to Ben Bradley’s office to meet Ben. B.
Mrs. Graham traveled to Japan with a number of her staff to see for herself how the Japanese Tech community were able to compete and beat US Semiconductor and consumer tech companies.
On her way back to DC, she stopped in Silicon Valley. I heal a “evening with” dinner with the Presidents of about 30 or 40 high tech companies. They all had a great evening get to know about what makes the media tick and vice versa, why the SV Tech Community felt about how they are viewed by the media.
I just hope that the WP crashes in flames so it becomes a worthless hulk burnt to the waterline and discarded by Bezos. Then, some time in the future, it can be bought and rebuilt to again become the great newspaper it once was.
Loved this piece, Reed. The broligarch's money doesn't buy them happiness. Nor does it buy them the adulation they seek. There's a poverty of emptiness in their souls that no amount of money can cure. They just don't realize it. It is sad, dangerous and a ruination of all that is good---such as the once outstanding Washington Post.
RIP The Washington Post
(1877 - 2025)

Thank you for writing this. I’m so disgusted with Bezos for doing what he’s doing!
