This discussion was very intense. Sooooooo? what specifically do we need to look for as we speak with all neighbors, etc. I agree we need a big tent. What from the status quo needs to go? And what doesn't? Or said this way: What in the "box" needs to go? What stays? I guess that is the question we need to try answer.
I concur with Ron that it will take a broad coalition of Americans with differing idealogical persuasions to crush the MAGA fascist movement. That is why I am active in political organizations ranging from the far-left to the right-of-center.
But I think that attempting to win over voters wearing MAGA hats is a complete waste of time and energy, even when they voted for Obama twice. Because at that point, they have permanently given up on American democracy. Like it or not, politics in the United States has been permanently altered and realigned by the rise of Trump and MAGA.
Hence, the best strategy, in my humble opinion, for Democrats and other anti-Trump Americans is to try to win over the four percent or so of Americans who voted for Trump strictly for economic reasons in 2024, most of whom voted for Biden in 2020, and the Biden 2020 voters who disengaged from politics altogether in 2024 for economic reasons and because of the situation in the Middle East, as you have recommended, Reed (I am not exactly sure how many of them are out there).
Maybe the right approach is a progressive populist agenda on economic issues, like what Ron suggested, that would include a single-payer health care system or a massive investment in housing financed by socking it to the filthy rich oligarchs like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg, a new voting rights bill, taking a harder line against the Likudniks without abandoning Israel, ending the filibuster in the Senate, and expanding the Supreme Court to 13 seats.
But to try to dialogue in good faith with the tens of millions of Americans who have no desire to live in a pluralistic multi-cultural democracy and reject basic facts, besides being a complete waste of time and energy, platforms odious and insane views like conspiracy theories around the 2020 presidential election and junk science around vaccines. And will do nothing except further empower the MAGA fascists.
Every failure of the Trump regime, regardless of how conspicuous and incontrovertible, will be ascribed by these Americas to immigrants of color, the deep state, liberal elites, and neocons.
