It wasn’t just that United Healthcare’s CEO was gunned down in a brazen attack in midtown Manhattan this week. It was that social media had little to no sympathy for a man shot in the back and left for dead by an assassin. Brian Thompson’s murder brought the (often-intentional) dysfunction of the American healthcare system, its arbitrary nature, and how often they make decisions that have little to no bearing on reality or decency.
