A Little Political Jiujitsu for Your Independence Week

If you remember your School House Rock, the Republicans’ budget busting bullshit bill has to go back to the House of Representatives for either an up and down vote or a conference committee, which would wreck President Donald Trump’s 4th of July deadline.

Per Axios, “House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is facing an explosion of internal anger among his members over the Senate's changes to President Trump's "big, beautiful bill.”

Based on the article alone, we can peel off enough votes to Kill (the) Bill.

But you won’t sway any of these Republican House members by appealing their sense of decency, good government, or responsibility.

Instead, go after them on things they care about. Two quick instances:

For blue-state Republicans, the reduction of the “SALT” deduction from $40,000 to $10,000 in the Senate bill.

For red-state Republicans, the lack of sufficient budgetary cuts in the Senate version.

Blue State Script:

“Hi, I’m calling to ask Congressman Mike Lawler to protect New York taxpayers. We need tax relief and the Senate bill isn’t going to do it.”

Red State Script:

“There’s nothing more pressing than our federal debt and budget deficit. I’m calling Congressman Chip Roy and asking him to stand firm on our spiraling debt.”

Don’t overthink or over complicate the exercise. I’m not asking you to find religion with Republicans. I’m asking you to help push them in a direction they already want to go, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, to find enough allies in the GOP Conference such that when Trump starts screaming at them, they feel there’s safety in numbers.

Could they crumble? Sure. Will they? Probably. But let’s not make it easy for them.
