How We Can Fix Primary Elections with Unite America's Nick Troiano

We Must Reform Our Elections to Include More Americans

In a time when political polarization appears more pronounced than ever, the need for electoral reform has become crucial. I interview Unite America Executive Director Nick Troiano and delve into the challenges and opportunities facing the American democratic system. We explore how innovative reforms can help reshape the political landscape and better represent the voices of all citizens.

The last decade has seen significant shifts in American politics, especially following the election of Donald Trump. Nick notes that the election reform movement gained traction from those who viewed Trump as a symptom of deeper systemic issues rather than merely a political outsider. This perspective highlights a growing discontent with a system that fails to address the real concerns of the populace.

One of the core issues we discuss is the role of party primaries in exacerbating political division. Nick points out that 92% of U.S. House seats are effectively decided in the primaries, leaving many voters disenfranchised. In fact, 17 million independents are locked out of primary elections in 16 states, leading to a Congress that often represents extreme views rather than the majority. This situation calls for a reevaluation of how candidates are elected, suggesting that reforming the primary system could yield more representative outcomes.

Unite America advocates for open primaries, allowing all voters to choose their preferred candidates regardless of party affiliation. Recent polling indicates that a significant 71% of voters support such reforms, transcending party lines. Nick argues that opening primaries would encourage broader participation and result in candidates who are more representative of the electorate.

Nick and I discuss highlights successful examples of electoral reform, such as California’s top-two primary system (which I helped pass many moons ago) and Alaska’s top-four system. These reforms have demonstrated that allowing multiple candidates to advance can lead to more representative outcomes. For instance, in Alaska, the recent elections showed that a moderate Democrat could win by appealing to a broader coalition, illustrating the potential benefits of a more inclusive electoral process.

Electoral reform is more relevant than ever as citizens grapple with disillusionment towards traditional political parties. By advocating for changes to the primary system and promoting open elections, organizations like Unite America are working to ensure that democracy serves all Americans, not just the political elite. As Nick emphasizes, the task for citizens today is to innovate and improve the systems of self-governance, ensuring that every voice has the opportunity to be heard.
