Alvaro Bedoya was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve on the Federal Trade Commission. Though his term was not scheduled to end until 2026, he an another commissioner were illegally removed from their positions by the Trump administration in March of this year.
Since then, Alvaro has been working through what he saw and learned during his time with the FTC; the Americans he met, their issues, and why government, after all, does have a crucial and central role in protecting citizens from rapacious corporate actors and those who would make life’s playing field even more uneven.
In his essay, How I Became A Populist, published earlier this month in The New Republic, Alvaro writes:
“Many liberals remain baffled that America elected Donald Trump. They genuinely have no idea how he could have won the election. I don’t think that Trump won because of “wokeism” or the “trans agenda,” whatever that is. I think he won by speaking to that despair and telling people that he alone could fix it.”
As I have written many times on this platform, until and unless those that ask to lead our nation get out and spend time among her people, they will continue to appear (and be) out of touch with what is happening in small towns and urban areas alike.
